Value of an Internship

Undergraduate Internships & Experiential Learning

What is experiential learning?

Experiential learning is an educational approach that involves learning through experience and reflection. It encourages students to develop a passion for learning by engaging in authentic experiences that allow them to apply theory to practice. While internships are one example of experiential learning other examples include site visits, career treks, professional development courses, international seminars, project-based work, and other enriching experiences such as job shadowing, involvement in student organizations, and engaging in academic research.

Why Pursue an Internship?

Internships provide an excellent opportunity for students to integrate classroom learning, theory, and practice in a professional setting. By participating in an internship, School of Communication students can gain valuable experience by exploring their career interests and building their resumes. Internships provide a structured opportunity to connect with professionals in communication, film, television, theatre management, sound, health, data science, business, law, advocacy, and more.  In a competitive post-college job market, the ability to demonstrate preparedness for and familiarity with an industry can be a foundation for success.

It’s important to note that you are free to pursue internships that fall outside the traditional scope of your major; in fact, these opportunities can often open new career pathways and further enhance your development as a well-rounded, multi-dimensional professional.

Finding an Internship

SoC students considering internships are encouraged to meet with an EPICS team member to discuss how an internship can help you explore your professional interests and further your career goals.  Visit EPICS’ “Start Your Search” page for an outline of first steps and resources.

Northwestern Career Advancement (NCA) is our University-wide career services office and supplemental resource for SoC students’ career needs. EPICS and NCAwork together to help students with a wide range of career goals and interests. Visit NCA’s website  to identify job and internship opportunities.

There are many ways to identify potential internships: job boards, company websites, fellow students, alumni, family, and of course, Handshake. We encourage you to schedule an appointment with an EPICS team member to discuss your interests, address your questions, and develop an action plan. Check out our EPICS “Start Your Search” page for resources and possible first steps.  We also encourage you to check out the resources available via Northwestern Career Advancement’s website. There is also an NCA career advisor assigned to provide additional support to School of Communication majors.

One more word of advice: pay attention to internship application openings and closing dates. Waiting until the deadline to apply for an internship can be a recipe for disappointment, particularly for internships that are in demand.
